Out of Water

And it has changed everything!

“Images of drought” was the prompt that I used on DALL-E to generate this feature image

Last week the water tank ran dry.

Our large rural property is in regional New South Wales (NSW) Australia. We’re not alone in experiencing this issue in our area — the ABC (ABC = The Australian national public broadcaster) has started reporting others experiencing the possibility of a new drought:

“It turned off like the tap at the end of 2022”

We agree. We saw that too. The rain just stopped. Yes there were a few dribs and drabs — but they just touched the sides of the tank on the way through.

Our Dream..

This property of ours is our dream.

We spent almost 20 years working towards it as our version of the Robert K dream card. In case you’re not familiar with the rat race game — the dream card is the thing you aim to buy to win the game after you get out of the rat race.

It’s that thing you hold out in front of you that motivates you to do the hard yards, to make the changes in your life that you need to make to reach it. To sacrifice, scrimp and save.

Our dream card, by design, has very few people nearby. Please don’t take that personally. It’s just that way for us. We’ll talk about neurodiversity later.

Because of that requirement, our place is in the middle of nowhere. Our closest neighbor is more than 3 km (1.86 miles) away. And that’s a good thing. It’s quiet (essential!). There’s no traffic. The closest town with shops is over 45 minutes away and the closest real city is over an hour and a half away. To get to those places you have to take at least 25km (15.5 miles) of dirt track and gravel road before you hit the tar.

That’s a tradeoff that works for us.

It might not suit you — but for us it’s the “Retreat from Service” we spent our life working towards. (More on the RfS term in the future)
