What should I write about today?
We home school. It should be no surprise that as the sort of people who write on Medium, that we think story telling and being able to communicate in writing is an important skill for our kids to learn.
We believe in the future of no work. Our kids aren’t going to do what we did. They’re not going to want (or have?) the option of a nine to five, reliable long term, single employer job like we did back in the “good old days”.
That means we want them to be good at creating their own intellectual property — and participating in the market place for such stuff as soon as possible.
Today that means something like Medium.
So we encourage our kids to write a story at least every week. Which of course is just as challenging for them as it is for the adults out there trying to find something to “just write”.
We’ve learnt that to get good at writing you need to do writing.
And sometimes that’s hard. I’m not the first to suggest that one way to fix this is to commit to an appointment with your writing — and just do it.
Even when you’ve got nothing to say. And really don’t want to. It’s work. Even if we do sit and do it together on a comfy couch.
